2006 β Nintendo Wii
Motion controls got everyone moving.
About this technology
A game box that gets you moving. You hold a small remote, swing, point, and press to play, and families stand up and laugh together.
The remote can feel quick shakes and big swings, and a strap keeps it safe on your wrist. You can make a little Mii that looks like you, and many sets came with a sports game so you could start straight away.
Arriving in the UK in December 2006, the Wiiβs motion play helped children, parents, and grandparents join in. Simple games turned home time into active time, even in schools, and classic games were available to download from the online shop.
Fun facts
- Sounds in your hand: The remote has a tiny speaker that makes little βclicksβ and βwhooshesβ as you play.
- Blue glow: The disc slot lights up bright blue when a message arrives or you put in a game.
- Safer play: After some flying remotes, the straps were made stronger and a soft rubber jacket was added.
